An excerpt from "Your Foal: Essential Training for the Young Horse":

This is a simple thing really, a matter of you looking over your horse and taking stock of his stance. Bring your foal out to your training area and let him wander. Lean back against a fence and look him over. Is he running around with his head high in the air, his legs stiff as he moves, looking out of the ring, ignoring you and calling to his buddies? Tense. When he turns to you, can you see the whites of his eyes? Scary tense. When you move around him, (today, yesterday, tomorrow), does he stand unnaturally rock solid, like a fainting goat, his feet planted, the muscles in his neck and back taut, maybe even shaking? An accident looking for a place to happen tense. Note these things when you work your colt. Realize that the horse that's running around like a lunatic isn't learning jack, nor is the one standing there too petrified to move. Be calm yourself and request repeated inside turns to bring his emotions down (not to tire, but to create focus). That's when the learning begins.
