An excerpt from "Your Foal: Essential Training for the Young Horse":

Next, number two on our list. Let's cover horses that are putting in an effort versus those that are not. Quality training involves your ability to understand that you might be pushing your horse too fast. He's trying, he's just not getting it. It also requires that you understand when you're being played for a fool.

We've all seen riders with bratty horses making one excuse after another for their situation. "He only bites when he's tired." "He won't get in white trailers; his mother was killed in a white trailer." Spare me. The horse gets his way – and he gets worse every day. Y'know, the typical inmate doesn't "just end up in" prison. He's been ignoring boundaries for years. Same goes for difficult horses – they've been allowed to slide downward for quite some time. You have the opportunity now to start your baby out on a path that'll lead to many years of quality time on the trail, chasing cows or taking blue ribbons. You just have to establish a zero tolerance policy, give the horse credit when he tries, and discipline when it's deserved.
