An excerpt from "Your Foal: Essential Training for the Young Horse":
The horse described above that's running around the round pen, calling to his buddies and ignoring you is not only tense – he's also completely out to lunch on any training you might think you're doing. You'll want to ask for those inside turns not only to channel his energy (and therefore calm him) – but also to cause him to focus on you. The two results go hand in hand. Be aware as you ask for these turns, however, of a subtle change: At some point, the horse will begin to tune in to you as evidenced by him keeping two eyes on you or cocking his ears toward you or by completing his turns fluidly or by looking at you after the turn as if to say "What's next?" It's very, very, very important that you are aware of this and always, always, always know which horse (Jekyll or Hyde) you're looking at at any particular moment.
