Years ago John Lyons used to tell of a boy and a girl who begin dating. The girl is appalled at the big green chair the boy sits in daily to watch his football games: It’s ratty and garish. He loves it. It’s comfortable and broken in. This is just a first date so the girl he can take or leave. She sees this weakness and willingly overlooks it - for now. The two hit it off and time passes; the girl is careful to never mention the green chair. They are married and one day the new husband returns to find his chair not in the center of the room, but over in the corner. She calms him, saying something like “Moving the chair puts you closer to the fridge, honey.” Wow! How does he argue with that? That makes terrific sense and he only wishes he’d thought of it himself. Days turn into months and every so often, he returns to find his chair “just that much closer” to the garage door. Finally, one day he comes home to find it... egad, actually in the garage. He mentions this to his wife who says something like “But, honey, I haven’t even SEEN you sit in that chair in months, what with you being so busy running to Lowe’s, Home Depot and whatnot.” (rpt)
